During the First Gulf War, a series of casualties occurred in the army of the international coalition lead by the USA, primarily caused by its own air force due to the fact that they could not differentiate between coalition and non-coalition vehicles. The reason for this was the dirt and dust from the desert that accumulated on the vehicles and covered up the friendly forces’ identifying insignias.
This aspect, which seemed of little importance (the cleanliness of the land vehicles) resulted in great losses, both human and material. In addition, and to make matters worse, the Kuwait desert did not offer any viable alternatives with regard to the availability of water for vehicle cleaning. Thus, the American Government and the Pentagon worked to find a solution to this serious problem. Research and studies were subsidised in order to find a vehicle washing system that could produce the best results possible with minimal water consumption in order to clean the combat vehicles. The engineers faced a three-fold challenge: the system had to be versatile, suitable for any type of vehicle; fast, so as not to reduce the troops’ operational capacity; and consume as little water as possible, due to the scarcity of this resource in the area. Furthermore, the facility must have a simple design and be easily mounted so that it could be put in service wherever it was needed. These challenges were met by InterClean Equipment, Inc., founded in 1985 in Ann Arbor (Michigan). This company, led by its Engineering Director and President Olli Lamminen, had extensive experience in vehicle wash engineering. The system developed by InterClean solved the military problem and later, revolutionised the transport vehicle washing sector in the civilian world. In 2005, Truck Wash Europa S.L., a company set up in Spain, imported this cutting-edge system from InterClean Equipment Inc. to Europe and opened its first washing centre in Esparraguera. Within a short period of time, it reached a total of over 80 trucks washed a day in this first tunnel. New openings followed the one in Esparraguera: Getafe in Madrid, Alfajarín in Zaragoza, Abanto in Bilbao, Riu Clar in Tarragona, Crevillent in Alicante and lastly, CIM Vallés in Barcelona. We currently have 7 centres operating in Spain. However, our expansion plans do not stop there. We will continue to increase the number of centres in order to provide a better service to our clients. Projects underway or being considered involve the cities or logistics areas of Seville, Almería, Guarromán, Coslada, Ribarroja, Irún, La Jonquera, Arasur, etc. Once the expansion in Spain is complete, our strategy includes establishing ourselves in all the other countries in Europe. This is how we plan to achieve our mission of becoming the benchmark in Europe with regard to industrial vehicle washing through our fast, economical, versatile and environmentally-friendly system. |
